Spanish Civil War books by Nick Lloyd

Travels around the Spanish Civl War

My second book Travels around the Spanish Civl War is out in November 2025 published by Hurst. Details and preorders here.

‘Truly original and, at the same time, compellingly readable. It is a real treat to be taken around Spain today in search of memories of the war by a guide as invariably knowledgeable and hawk-eyed, as funny and as sensitive, as Nick Lloyd.’ — Paul Preston, author of The Spanish Civil War: Reaction, Revolution and Revenge

‘A thoughtful and engaging journey through Spain’s troubled past. Nick Lloyd brings history to life with curiosity, clarity and compassion, shedding fascinating new light on familiar ground while revealing overlooked stories from one of Europe’s most pivotal conflicts.’ — Jason Webster, author of Guerra: Living in the Shadows of the Spanish Civil War

‘A masterly piece of objective writing on the Spanish Civil War. Researched with scrupulous honesty in the vein of Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia, it makes compelling reading, helping us to understand more about this terrible war.’ — Richard Blair, Trustee of The Orwell Society, and son of George Orwell

‘For anyone who cares about the Spanish Civil War, this book is a literary—and visual—treat. And for anyone who wants to see how history can be brought alive by going to the places where it happened, it’s a superb model.’ — Adam Hochschild, author of King Leopold’s Ghost and Spain in Our Hearts: Americans in the Spanish Civil War

‘Engaging, eclectic and evocative, Lloyd’s “road trip” conjures the landscapes and people of that long-ago war that is forever near. Weaving the past into our present, we’re reminded compellingly that the war’s stakes are still everywhere in play.’ — Helen Graham, author of The Spanish Republic at War

‘Nick Lloyd combines an encyclopedic knowledge with the art of a gifted story teller. Rich in historic detail and with an eye for the telling anecdote, this book is a fascinating account of the Civil War in Catalonia and what it means today.’ — David Mathieson, author of Frontline Madrid: Battlefield Tours of the Spanish Civil War

‘An illuminating journey through Spain and its past. Clearly written, with helpful illustrations, the book is a must for anyone wishing to understand the legacy of Spain’s brutal civil war and dictatorship.’ — Richard Baxell, author of Forged in Spain

Forgotten Places: Barcelona and the Spanish Civil War

The second corrected edition of my first book “Forgotten Places: Barcelona and the Spanish Civil War” (2015) is available on print on Amazon and Kindle.

The book is a guide to places and events Barcelona in the Spanish Civil War, but although it is centred on 1936-39 it also covers the working class history of the city from the late 19th century, looking at the conditions and movements which led to the revolution of 1936. Stories from the aftermath of the war and the Franco regime are also included.

In addition with dealing to the more obvious themes such as anarchism, George Orwell, the aerial bombings, the May Days, etc, it also looks at more off topic themes such as the Zoo during the Civil War, Barça, urbanism, Nazis in Barcelona, Robert Capa, the Spaniards in the Holocaust, poster art… Intertwined in the text are contemporary quotes, and a few personal stories of people who experienced the war or its aftermath which have never been published before. There are extensive biographies of figure such as George Orwell in Barcelona, the Catalan president Lluís Companys and the POUM leader Andreu Nin.

The book is divided into two main sections: a history of the war centred on Barcelona (35,000 words) and the main guide (90,000 words) to the sites sub-divided into neighbourhoods and accompanied by maps. The sites are often used as an excuse to tell stories of some aspect on the war.

There is also an introduction, a glossary, index, and bibliography.
